According to Hindu mythology, King Mahabali was a great king of Kerala who was generous and well-liked by his subjects. During his reign, the kingdom was prosperous and the people adored their king, but the enemy demons who wanted to end his rule from Earth were envious of him and sent Lord Vishnu to King Mahabali.
Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Vamana, a Brahmin, and went to King Mahbhali to test him. Mahbhali agreed to give him three feet of land, so Lord Vishnu divided the world into states and asked Mahbhali for a place to place his third step. Mahbhali asked Vamana to place his third step on his head, which led to the nether world, but this made Lord Vishnu happy and he was pleased by his devotion.
